CONFERENCES FOR PEDIATRICIANS |
a.
Neonatology Update at Palakkad in May 19th 2002.
b. Perinatology Update at Manjeri on 29th September 2002.
c. XXII Annual Convention of NNF, on 19th to 22nd December
2002, at Galfar, Kochi was a grand success in every sense
of the word. The venue was excellent, the food was good, and
the scientific fare was highly educative. |

NALS Workshop for Gynecologists and Neonatal/Labour Room Staff
Nurses of Thrissur District on 7-4-2002 at Elite Mission Hospital,
Thrissur. ii.
NALS Workshop on 15-12-2002 at Mother Hospital, Thrissur.
30 Pediatricians, 26 Gynecologists and 24 Staff Nurses participated.
The five trainers with four mannequins had their hands full.

NURSING SCHOOL LIBRARIES |
| A free copy of "Essentials
of Neonatal Nursing" in Malayalam was given to every
Nursing School in the state, for teaching purposes. |

| VII.
TROPHIES |
To promote newborn activities,
NNF Kerala has decided to award two trophies every year from
now on to IAP District branches. This year the awards went
to:
Best Branch Award : IAP
Ernakulam
Newborn Week Celebration : IAP Wayanad

| VIII.
HIGH-RISK NEWBORN FOLLOW-UP CLINIC |
| NNF Kerala and IAP Thrissur
together have come up with a plan for establishing High-Risk
follow-up clinics in every hospital which manages high-risk
newborns. In the initial phase the plan is to focus on medical
college hospitals and selected hospitals in each district
with large numbers of deliveries. A proforma has been prepared
for this purpose, and is being evaluated. |

QUIZ COMPETION FOR POSTGRADUATES IN NEONATOLOGY |
| Cochin branch organized the
Neonatology Quiz for Postgraduates of Kerala state on 15-9-2002.

| X.
NEONATOLOGY QUIZ FOR NURSING STUDENTS |
The T A Velunni Memorial Quiz
on Neonatal Nursing was conducted in every Nursing Zone in
Kerala, in co-ordination with the SNAI (Student Nurses' Association
of India) Kerala Chapter. All participants received certificates.
The winners received prizes consisting of textbooks and clocks,
and then participated in the Finals, which was conducted at
Ernakulam during the Newborn Week.

The finals were hosted by
Cochin branch on 21- 11- 2002. Renjini KT and Vidya P Nair
of NSS Medical Mission Hospital, Karukachal of South East
Nursing Zone were the proud winners of the Rolling Trophy.
The Runners-Up were Sonia K Francis and Simi Das of SSNMMH
Varkala of South Zone. |

A. BFHI
06.1.2002 Pathanamthitta District declared as Baby-Friendly.
11.1.2002 Kozhikode District declared as Baby-Friendly.
12.7.2002 Thiruvananthapuram District declared as Baby-Friendly.
01.8.2002 Kerala State declared as Baby-Friendly.
B. Kudumbasree Project
UNICEF has granted financial support of Rs 2 lakhs to NNF
Kerala for the Kudumbasree Project. In brief, mothers now
receive significant information about child care and mother
care, but not about newborn care. NNF Kerala will prepare
materials to teach mothers about newborn care. At every
district, Kudumbasree Health workers will be given training
in the material, and they will in turn teach the mothers
and the Anganwadi workers through the village units.

PROPOSED
PLAN OF ACTION DEC 2002 - NOV 2003 |
1. TA Velunni Memorial Quiz on Neonatal
Nursing will continue, organized by the Nurses' Association
and with local Pediatricians as experts. CMEs and NALS workshops
will be conducted along with the quiz wherever possible.
2. Kudumbashree project will get priority this year.
3. NALS Workshops for Doctors and Labour Room and OT Staff
Nurses in every district, emphasising the recent modifications
in the International NALS Protocol. Every participant will
receive an up-to-date NALS Manual. (The first such workshop
was conducted in Trichur in December 2002, and the response
was overwhelming, with 30 Pediatricians, 26 Gynecologists
and 24 Nurses.)
5. Neonatology Quiz for Medical Students.
6. Resuscitation Corners to be established in more hospitals.
Ensure that the Resuscitation area has all essential resuscitation
equipment, and then take a photo of it and send it to the
NNF State Secretary.
7. NALS Training in the Medical Colleges: NALS and BFHI training
to PGs in Pediatrics and Gynecology is very important. All
MBBS students and Nursing Students need training in the Essentials
of Neonatal Care.
8. NNF Membership : Encourage membership of this vibrant organization,
which has over 3000 members, with an excellent Journal since
many years, and its own website.
9. Promote close co-operation between the State NNF and IAP
in all activities.
10. Improve reporting of NNF activities. |
