Asha kendram
is a day centre meant for the normalisation of the mentally retarded
individuals. The school was started by all Kerala Association for
the Mentally Retarded persons in 1980. Father Thomas Felix is the
founder director of Asha Kendram. At first only on 2nd saturdays
classes were conducted. The frequency of the classes were increased
to once in a week thrice a week and finally 5 days a week. Regular
programme was started in 1981 with 5 children and now the strength
has increased to 65 students. |

Snehanilayam
is on the Ernakulam - Kakkanad Road. The first year there was 30
children on the roll, divided into three classes. The number
increased each year and now it has reached the maximum number that
can be accomodated.
About the curriculam, besides 3R'S much
importance is given to other areas of training - home management,
home science, arts & crafts, music & dance, gardening,
physical exercise, yoga etc. Sports is a priority in the curriculam.
In 1991, two students from the school participated in the
International Special Olympics held at Minniapollis, U. S. A. - as
part of the Indian football team |

Raksha was
found in 1985 and is affiliated to the spastics society of Eastern
India, Calcutta. Beginning modestly with 2 children and a staff of
3, it now extends its services to over 82 children who attend
classes regularly at the Centre and over 150 children who receive
service under the Home Based Management Programme. Raksha started an
Early Intervention Clinic in 1992 involving visit of therapists to
hospitals to examine new born babies for high risk factors and to
administer therapy to the babies and guidance to parents of the
babies. |

The school
started on 14th November 1982 at Fatima Nursery, twice in a week
with 10 children and 4 teachers. After six months it became a full
time day school. In 1985 number of students increased into 30. In
Nov. 1986 the school hosted Mini Special Olympics. In February 1987
ten children participated at Bombay Special Olympics out of which
Kumari Shelvi was selected for International Special Olympics at
Indiana USA. In December 1988 North Kerala Special Olympics was
hosted. In September 89 North Kerala Coaches training programme was
conducted. In November 1990 All Keral Special School 'Kalolsav' was
conducted by Jaycees Society. In June 1993 School shifted to its own
building at Dharmadam. In 1994 one of our students Sreejith P. K.
participated in Jakartha National Games. |

In April 1980
twelve Inner Wheel Memebrs formed a society for Rehabilitation of
Mentally Deficient children and started this school. We owe a debt
of gratitude to Mr. Haridas Govardhana Das who allowed to use his
building free of rent for the first 10 years. In 1990 we moved to
our own building. The school has a beautiful park gifted by our
well-wishers in Muscat. On 30th October 1994, a vocational training
centre namely 'Karmasala' donated by M. S. Narayanans Charities,
Coimbatore, was started functioning. The ultimate aim of education
and training of the handicapped is to make them merge into main
stream of Society. |

After a
survey conducted by the members of the Daughters of St. Camillus, it
was found that there were hundreds of children with mental
retardation - Thus a portion of the hospital building was set aside
for the training and care of the Mentally retarded. Since it is a
hilly place surrounded by a chain of mountains, there is a problem
of trasportation. 22 students were admitted first and started the
school with teachers and two ayas. At first, classes were conducted
only thrice a week for six years. From 1998 classes were conducted
for 5 days in a week. Now there are fifty five students and given
free training and boarding. |

was started on 1st January 1990 by Pattuvam sisters with very few
children in a small building. Later a spacious building was
constructed and the school was shifted to it. Now we have 35
children of ages 5 yrs. to 37 yr. Most of the children are from poor
families. There are some orphans also. We are not collecting any fee

The humble
begining of this institution was in a rented building as a day
centre. Seirei Asha Bhavan Charitable society members contributed
generously to the daily needs.
In 1991 could buy a land and home
for the centre. The centre could conduct free medical camps for the
Epileptic Mentally Retarded Children with the help of the Government
Hospital doctors & specialist
Indian Medical Association,
Punalur Branch has adopted the school and gives free treatment and
monthly Medical check up and keeps a health card. all the programmes
of the centre is aimed at creating social awareness and to integrate
the handicapped into the main stream. |

The school is
conducted in a part of the YWCA hostel building. The school was
started with four children, one teacher and one ayah & now the
number has increased to 40 children, four teachers and two ayahas.
School is giving free education to all children. The school is
getting grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Social Welfare sicne 1979.
Expenses are met by the Grant -in-aid, donations of well wishers &
by the Association.
The major aims asnd objectives of the school
are to promote full develpment of children who are mentally
retarded, irrespective caste & creed and to provide educational
and vocational training to them and to make the public aware of the
problems & needs of mentally retarded.
The members of YWCA,
parents of children & the public are very co-operative and take
great interest in the Welfare of these children. The children
participate regularly in special olympics and special cultural
programmes. |

The school
was started in a small building with 10 children and two teachers,
and was inagurated by Fr. Thomas Felix. In 1993. The new building
was inagurated by Mr. Ramesh Chennithala MP. Mar Kuriakose
Kanasserry, Bishop of Kottyam, presided over the function. The
strength of the students have increased to 40. Book binding was
started in 1994. There were so many well wishers for the school and
they presented T.V. set, sea saw etc. for the school and they

programme was started in 1994. St. Joseph's congretaion has
presented a jeep for the children. As part of the home based
training, teachers visit houses of children and give instuctions to
the parents. Children of the school participates in Cultural &
Sports programmes conducted by various agencies. |

Bhavan; a residential school for the mentally Retarded was started
on 27 th December 1981. It is managed by the sistersof visitaion, in
the Diocese of Kottyam. Admission formalities are done by the board
members and admission is given to both boys & girls of all
functional level irrespective cast & creed. Most of the students
are from poor families. Children are sent home for Onam holidays,
X'mas holidays and summer vaccation. Children of this centre are
given training to go for shopping, grinding wheat & rice and to
help in Kitchen. After 5 years training one boy has started working
in a match box company. |
